Running The Atlanta Marathon In 2011

I last ran a marathon in 1990 and finished in 4 hours and 48 minutes. (That's 12 minutes before they start taking up the cones, by the way! :-) )

Since the ride is done, and since I don't have plans to do another, I need something to keep me busy and in "planning" mode, so I've started training in addition to cycling (working all sets of leg muscles).

As you might guess, I'll be starting off with "baby steps", i.e. walking and working my way up to running 5 and 10k's and adding mileage from there.

If you're into walking and want to join me virtually, I recommend the cd's "60's walking (or 70's, 8's, 90's etc.) by a company called Workout Music (not affiliated).

The pace begins at 3.0 mph and the music is geared to BPM (beats per minute) so that every time your foot hits the ground, you're walking in time to the music. The next level is 3.2, which you should do when you feel comfortable at 3.0 and can carry on a conversation without gasping for breath. Personally, I find I train better with music than without, and I'm currently at 4.1. The next one is called "Classical Symphoney Power Walking" and goes to 4.6 in 2 levels. All workouts are 30 minutes and feature 2 different speeds. My goal is the Marine Corps Cadence runs, which are a good race pace.

A link to the workout music is in the title line of this post and you can hear a 2 minute sample here: http://www.workoutmusicvideo.com/walkr6w.html

In other news, I'm still active in animal welfare advocacy and am currently working on getting the Paulding County Humane Society re-motivated, since they've been basically kicked out of volunteering at the local animal "shelter", and have all laid down and are licking their wounds (so to speak).

They need to re-organize and form committees to discuss building their own free-standing facility, but I think they feel more comfortable writing about how "helpless" they all feel and how they're "in tears" because so many animals are being killed. (Not "euthanized" - killed.) I want to either, 1. shame them or 2. anger them (even if it's at me). I am giving them all sorts of ideas, but so far - nothing. If you care to read about what's going on, here's a link to their forum: http://paulding.com/forum/index.php?/forum/99-four-legged-friendzy/ . My nickname there is Christopher Robin.

Yesterday, (Tuesday) D and I worked at the local precinct for voting, which also happens to be where we go to church (well, where D goes to church, I only go when she bitches at me for NOT going). Counting getting up at 4:30 am and working in total to 8:30 pm (polls close at 7, but it takes another hour and a half to take everything down), I wasn't good for much when we got home and went straight to bed.

Okay, that gets y'all up to date on the "German Boy". Write me something sometime, please. Don't make me feel like I'm talking to myself. I'd kinda like this to be my "diary" of sorts.

A little "joggin' music":

Soooooo glad to see you have found something to train for and look forward to and still keeping busy with your cause for the critters.

Maybe run this marathon for Alzheimer's/dementia? It might give more meaning and motivation.

Love ya both, Becks

Sounds like your post-ride slump is a thing of the past. I like your positive attitude, Bill, you're an inspiration to me. I have to get some sort of physical fitness plan going soon.
Take care, keep on running!
